Thinking Ahead in the Music

I was working with a little person who was having trouble getting the thumb of her left hand to play on beat three, entering into the phrase that the right hand was already playing. Well, it made me think about what she needed to do, which was to rehearse in her mind that the thumb was going to play on beat three in her mind, even before she was playing the phrase. Feeling her thumb play that note on that beat, before it actually happened.  It worked. She got it and checked off the piece.

This is what we do; we think ahead, knowing and feeling the notes to be played, and even how it feels, before we play it. It goes on all the time while playing a piece. And we can learn a piece faster if we can identify a problem spot, see why it is a problem spot, then slowly rehearse how to do it rightly, and once getting it slowly, speeding it up with hands together to bring it to performance level.

I am learning a lot from my students this year. And I am really enjoying that.
